Is It Possible to “Spend ‘Til the End?”

July 19th, 2008 · 3 Comments

I was recently contacted by a representative from the company AssetBuilder about profiling the nationally syndicated personal finance columnist Scott Burns.  Simon & Schuster recently released a book that Scott coauthored with Boston University Professor of  Economics Larry Kotlikoff entitled “Spend ‘Til the End.”

After picking up my jaw off the floor I Googled the book, read an excerpt or two and learned a little bit more about Scott Burns.

In addition to being a personal finance columnist, Scott is the Chief Investment Strategist/Co-Founder of AssetBuilder, a financial advising firm that believes in a simple low fee approach to helping individuals build wealth.

Over the course of his career, Scott has covered the world of personal finance and investments for nearly 40 years.  He began as a newspaper columnist at the Boston Herald in 1977 and was picked up for national syndication in 1981.  In 1985 he joined the Dallas Morning News where his column quickly became one of the most widely read features in the paper.  After 20 years in Dallas he left the paper in 2006 to become one of the founders of AssetBuilder and its Chief Investment Strategist.  Scott still writes syndicated columns and remains one of the country’s five most widely read personal finance columnists.

Spend 'Til the End: The Revolutionary Guide to Raising Your Living Standard--Today and When You Retire

Scott has written four books, including “Spend ‘Til The End.” His business experience includes working as a staffer for a major consulting company and service as a director and audit chairman of a NASDAQ listed manufacturing company.

Scott and Larry pose some unconventional wisdom and challenge the typical advice offered by the established financial planning community.  Everything from retirement savings and investing needs to life insurance is addressed with the aim at insulating your living standard from significant ups or downs.  Hmm, sounds interesting.

I tend to think of myself a contrarian, both financially and technologically.  I’ve been using Apple Macs since long before the iPhone and iPod were twinkles in Steve Jobs‘ eyes.  So challenging the financial community is right up my alley.  I go it alone.  I set my own plan.  I determine my own investment strategy.  I Mind My Own Business.  I might enjoy this book.

Naturally I jumped at the opportunity.  In my most authoritative and confident email tone, I accepted the offer and stated that I would be happy to profile Scott and would like to review his new book, conduct some Q&A with Scott and then post the results on Minding My Own Business.  Two days later the FedEx guy was standing on my front porch with a fresh copy of “Spend ‘Til the End”.

Now here is where you come in.  I’m reading the book right now and am almost halfway through it.  I’m compiling a  list of great questions and notes but I’d like to get your perspective as well.  If you have a question or a point you’d like made, please send your ideas to me and I’ll include them when I interview Scott.

-Jeff
